here is the news for October ...
in the pinkThe idea that pink is for girls and blue is for boys is completely outdated. Pink suggests warmth and friendliness, which conveys approachability and empathy. Of course, there are many different shades of pink: light pink is viewed as soft and peaceful, whilst its cousin, hot pink is seen as bold and exciting. It is also associated with good health and happiness - “in the pink”, “everything is rosy” and “tickled pink”.
Wearing light pink can provide you with a sense of calm while brighter shades provide stimulation. So, there are lots of reasons to wear this colour in a very positive way. |
October is the month we always associate with ‘pink’ as Breast Cancer Now hosts its 'Wear It Pink' campaign to raise funds for life-changing research and support. So, this month, my Style Colour Image newsletter is all about shades of rose, blush, and bubblegum!
breast cancer now
Breast Cancer Now has a very ambitious but important goal: to make sure that by 2050, everyone who is diagnosed with breast cancer lives.
Over the last 20 years, this event has raised in excess of £41million. It isn’t too late to do your bit as it takes place on 18th October. Find out more here.

wear it pink
But I can't wear pink! Yes, you can! You may not like pink, but that’s a different story. In the tonal system, everyone receives at least one shade of pink.
You are a CLEAR if you have dark hair contrasting with coloured or bright eyes. Your look is one of the strongest and the colours you wear should reflect this. Blush pink works well with most of your neutral colours, providing there is a good level of contrast, from either end of the spectrum, like soft white and black.
Alternatively, try combining blush pink with a vivid mid-depth colour like emerald turquoise or true blue. If you like a pattern, choose a bold colour mix like scarlet, blush pink and white. Try a shiny fabric, which will intensify the colour, giving it an even richer hue. |
You are a SOFT if you have dark blonde or light brown hair, with little contrast between your hair, eyes and skin colour. Your best look is when you wear your colours tonally, particularly medium-depth shades, avoiding a strong contrast.
Shell is an incredibly versatile colour to have in your wardrobe, as it pairs beautifully with many neutrals like cocoa and pewter. Blush pink and charcoal blue create a chic combination, and for a wintry look, try pairing it with claret. As with Clear tones, fabric choice is essential—opt for materials that absorb light to soften the hue. |
You are a LIGHT if you have naturally blonde or pure white hair, pale eyes, lashes and eyebrows, and a delicate or porcelain skin tone.
You look marvellous in pink and can wear shades ranging from pastel to blush, either on their own or combined with lighter colours such as light grey, light aqua, and mint. Alternatively, you can pair lighter pink with deeper shades from your palette (especially useful for corporate wear), like cocoa, light teal, or petrol. The key is to keep the overall look light and uplifting by wearing light colours near your face. |
You are a DEEP if you have dark hair, dark eyes, with any skin tone from porcelain through to black.
Your strong look is reflected in your colour palette. Pastel pinks aren’t your friend if worn on their own, but you will find blush pink in your main palette, which is a really useful colour in the warmer months. Combine with the depth of true red or teal for a summery look and aubergine or forest green in winter. |
WARMS have red-toned hair in any shade, green, brown or blue eyes, and porcelain or golden skin tone.
There will be many shades of pink that won’t work for you. Most pinks have a blue-base which will cast shadows under your chin and around your mouth. However, coral and salmon pinks are yellow-based and so are the perfect pinks for you. You can use coral to "warm up" your neutrals, such as light navy, or to complement other neutrals like bronze or grey-green. Alternatively, have fun combining it with aqua and lime. |
You are a COOL if you have ash tones to your hair (most Cools are grey-haired), pink or sallow undertones to your skin (or blue tones if you have black skin).
You look fabulous in pinks with blue undertones: baby pink, rose pink, hot pink and the stronger cassis. It’s a good all-rounder from everyday to occasion wear. If you are combining with other colours, make sure there is some contrast to balance your look. Baby pink with rose beige is too light for you, but wear with sapphire for a flattering look. For corporate wear, try cassis and light grey. For unusual combinations try rose pink and pine, or hot pink and bright periwinkle. |
blushing brides
|
Did you know that pink is the most popular choice for bridesmaids (specifically, a very soft, pale pink)? However, this shade doesn’t suit everyone. Deeps and Clears may look washed out and might need to add extra blush and lipstick, while Warms can appear tired or grey. Blush pink can be a versatile shade as it is neither warm or cool, so could be a good option for bridesmaids.
|
An alternative to choosing one universal colour is to select the best hue of a shade for each individual, to create a colourful and joyful group.
I am planning to start offering bridal services early next year, so if you are a prospective bride (or mother wanting to look her best on the big day), please ask me about this. There will probably be a few free sessions while I sort out how to organise it. |
rosy accessories
Elevate an outfit easily by adding a pop of colour.
Pink shoes and bags are more often associated with summer dressing, but we saw quite a lot of pink at the Emmy’s last month (including top to toe from Helen Mirren), so don’t put away your pink accessories this season.

pink and polished
Of course, it is important that you wear the right pink on your face too. Lipstick is quite possibly the most important and impactful piece of kit in your make-up bag.

don't keep it to yourself!
Have you had a colour consultation? If you have, you will know how revolutionary and confidence-building wearing what suits you can be (although if your colouring has changed at all, think about an update if what you are wearing looks 'off'). Please do email me some feedback (especially if I can use it on my social media - there is no better advert) Make sure you tell a friend too. They can book a free 15 minute drop in (or phone call) to ask questions and explore what they need. |
reduce, rewear, repair, resell, recycle
Most of us wear 20% of our wardrobe 80% of the time. That's a lot of clothing doing nothing. Meanwhile, the UK is the most wasteful nation, buying more clothes than anyone else, and throwing away more as well. It is estimated that 11 million garments go into landfill every week, and while we are recycling more, the places that receive our recycling are getting so much stuff, that they are now putting it in landfill. Yes, we should also shop ethically, ensuring we are not supporting exploitation, and giving thought to sustainable fabrics. But perhaps we should also buy less in the first place. The fashion industry (and not just fast fashion) is a major contributor to greenhouse gases, and it won't do you any lasting favours either - just furnish a wardrobe of clothes you don't wear.
I can help you translate this season's key trends into your wardrobe in a way that makes you look and feel fabulous. One or two pieces will update your wardrobe, and if you get the colour and style right, will give you value for money in years to come.
