'fashion is fleeting, style is eternal' (Yves St Laurent)
WHAT CAN I WEAR? It all comes down to what's in your wardrobe.
Most of us wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. We waste money buying things we WON’T wear, then feeling bad because we DON’T wear them. We waste time trying to find something to wear from an overfilled wardrobe, taking things out and putting them back, running out of time, and wearing the same handful of things, but not feeling happy with the result ... so maybe going shopping for something to wear. It can be a vicious circle, and there are definitely better ways to spend your time and money, not to mention the waste of resources.

We have all seen the TV programmes and read the articles about 35 item capsule wardrobes, and the 'must have' pieces for this season. However, if you have been buying clothes for more than 10 years, you probably already have way more than 35 pieces (and it's daft to get rid of something you love), and the 'must haves' take no account of your colouring, body shape, personality and lifestyle. I believe it makes sense to think more realistically.

My 3 keys to a wearable wardrobe are joy, utility and sustainability, which together open the door to the simplicity of getting dressed easily and confidently.
JOY - love your clothes, and be confident wearing them.

Identify your 'hero' pieces of clothing - the things that literally make you happy when you look at them and wear them. These are the items to work your wardrobe around, so you love your clothing.
Know who you are - your personal style is important to your look - all consultations start here. |
Ensure your clothing makes you look great, so you feel confident to express who you are through what you wear.
To find the colours that harmonise with your colouring, and the styles, fabrics and proportions that work with your body shape, see the services page here. |
'fashion is what you are offered four times a year; style is what you choose to wear' (Lauren Hutton)
UTILITY - your wardrobe needs to work hard for you and provide ongoing value.
make it circular - selling or donating clothing you are no longer using will give it another life.
SUSTAINABILITY - don't let anyone pull the wool over your eyes - we have to buy responsibly for everyone's sake.
Look for quality, so pieces last and can be repaired.
Buy only what you need. Audit what you already have, and ensure anything you buy works with other items and harmonises with how you look and who you are. Know what works and shop secondhand first |
Check that what you buy is made from environmentally friendly fabric.
While you are checking this, also check for ethical production - if it's too cheap, then inevitably someone suffered along the way). Check the Fashion Transparency Index here to find out the facts. |

'buy less, choose well, make it last' (Vivienne Westwood)
As we understand more about the unscrupulous side of the fashion industry, concerns about ethics and environment become essential considerations, so buying better is important (which you can afford to do if you are buying less in the first place). With a little understanding, you can be stylish AND dress sustainably.
12 years ago, I trained with colour me beautiful, and the organisation celebrated its 40th birthday last year. Of course, things have changed over four decades, the most radical being the move from seasonal to tonal analysis (ask me about this if you want to know more). As a result, the colour me beautiful approach to wearing colour is, I believe, the most modern on the market. That is because we show you how to wear colour, rather than focusing on a rigid set of colours to wear, so you are able to save money and avoid waste by understanding how to wear what you already have in a way that works for you. When you know, you can make more outfits with fewer clothes, and when you do shop, you choose well, so you buy less.
I have children, and hope to have grandchildren, so having a habitable planet is important to me. Changing our lifestyles to acknowledge the reality of climate change may seem like a tall order, but there are many simple steps you can take very easily, and one of these is minimising your input to the vast amount the fashion industry contributes to the world's carbon.
